Watsonians 3 v Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 4 runs
Match report
D&C travelled to Craiglockart with a weakened side to face Watsonians 3's. Watsonians have had a hoodoo over D&C at Craiglockart in recent years and we were hoping today we would perform better.
Missing several key players we saw the comeback of Usman Saleem and welcomed Alistair and Pete in to help out this week.
Murray skippering in place of his brother again - won the toss and made Vasu extremely happy by finally batting first.
Honeyford snr and Dylan opened and unfortunately Dylan was bowled by Reid for 1.
Vasu joined Martin and they both found the bowling tough - with experienced Bunker tying them down at one end. We reached the 100 mark in the 24th over then Martin was bowled by Joshi for 38.
Murray came in - and Vasu scooped one back to the bowler when he was looking to fire up the scoreboard for 70.
Miller joined Callan - and two fresh faces at the crease meant the pressure was not on that pair - with the previous 2 getting out too close together. Miller not used to batting in the last few overs lobbed a catch to point. Then Murray also lobbed one up.
Cooper and Inzi were at the crease. Cooper was stroking it with ease - unfortunately Inzi's knee injury flared up straight away and he struggled to run. So 2s were just 1s.
Both were striking the ball well before Inzi fell LBW for 8. John Hutton in between times got out trying to hit a 6 for 1.
James H had a promotion up the order to 9 from his usual 11 - but could only muster 1 - then Pete came in and stroked 3 before being run out trying for a 2nd off the last ball of the innings.
Cooper finished 24 not out.
We started solidly - but ran out of steam when it mattered. Losing two "in" batsman within balls of each other was key to the lower than anticipated score.
Vasu and Martin both did a good job with good scores but we needed one of them to bat the innings.
Cooper came in and stole the show easing us up to the 176 mark. Probably 30 runs shy of where we should have been.
With the ball - Honeyford Jnr and Hutton opened.
Watsonians got off to a flyer - scoring 40 in 7 overs which really put the game in their hands to lose with 33 overs to go.
Callan changed the bowling in bringing on Honeyford snr and Dylan Wood. This proved to be inspired as Martin picked up Counsell Lbw for 37 and Dylan rally dried up the runs while picking up Fontana LBW for 37 before Miller took a diving catch at point of his bowling to get rid of Talbot.
We managed to haul Watsons at the 20 over mark back down to a respectable total of 80 for 3. (We were 81 for 1 at this stage so a very even game)
G Mawsdley and C Hilton then started to ply on the pressure scoring freely. At the 35 overs mark they were at 148 for 3 (we were 152 for 6 so again very even). However with only 28 needed to win off 30 balls Watsonians with wickets in hand were the strong favourites.
It was at this stage we panicked a bit - we were giving away no balls and overthrows which was making life easy for the batting pair.
Finally Vasu bowled Hilton for 29 leaving Watsons on 159 for 4 after 37 overs. 17 runs needed to tie of 18 balls.
John Hutton then finally got a breakthrough bowling D Mawdsley for 0 in the 38th over.
Bunker came in and was run out immediately by Miller trying to get a single of the last ball of the over to put the "in" Mawsdley on strike.
Vasu bowled the penultimate over and only went for 2 runs - which left Watons needing 15 to win of the last over.
Murray had miscalculated his bowling which left 15 year old James Honeyford to bowl the last over.
James held his nerve -and with first ball 2 - second ball they tried to run 2 but Miller picked up and threw from 10 yards off the boundary to James who ran the batter out - Mawdley smacked the next for 4. Next ball was a do leaving 9 to win off 3. Next ball was an easy single but an overthrow from Murray put Mawdsley back on strike and giving away an extra 1. So 7 to win was not doable - but 6 to tie was. With everyone on the boundary Mawsdley went for the glory shot - he hit it really well - but 10 yards short of the boundary and straight to Martin - and Watsons ended up 4 runs short.
A good win - in pressure situation. We got a bit heated with our selfs in stages - as we made very silly mistakes - overthrows and no balls contributing to the Watsons score.
The star of the bowling was Dylan Wood who helped bring the run rate under control as a surprised first change bowler. Also picking up 2 wickets.
James Honeyford did well to keep composed in the last over.
Points of note - we need to bat better - we batted ok - but then failed to make scores count with both Martin and Vasu falling a few balls apart when they were the in batters. Its never easy for new bats to come in and score at the same rate.
Bowling we need to be tighter and more consistant.
And fielding we need to attack the ball - but also we need to back up the stumps as this cost us a few runs.
Anyway 20 points in the bag. Watsonians deserved more from the game and played in excellent spirits. It was refreshing to finally see LBW's back in the rules of the game after recent weeks.
Next up home game v Broomhall.
