Drummond Tr 2 v Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 27 Apr 2019 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
D&C travelled to Inverleith Park to play newly promoted Drummond Trinity in the first league game of the season.
D&C new skipper Bruce Callan lost the toss and DT decided to bat first.
This had the potential to be a tasty game given at least 4 of the team played against D&C two years ago in the game that ended up not a game for Edinburgh CC'2s. Thankfully none of that bad blood spilled across into this game.
D&C opened the bowling with James Honeyford and Wajahat. Both bowled well - with James grabbing the first wicket of the season with Peter Millmore catching at Mid On - a ball that took an age to get there. K Anwar gone for 1. James then clean bowled the No 3 bat - Riaz for 0.
Waj bowled well but didnt pick up any wickets but only conceded one run in four overs.
Justin Taylor and Vasu Reddy were then brought into the attack. Vasu dropped a catch off Taylor's bowling at slip then Miller took a blinding catch of batter 2 from the bowling of Reddy low to his right to make the score 18 for 3. Miller then proceeded to drop a flashing inside edge of Taylor before Honeyford managed to catch batter 4 for 10 of Justin's bowling.
Reddy then expertly fielded and ran out Jamal for 1 throwing to Miller.
Reddy grasped another wicket with Bruce Callan Catching - Miller dropped another very sharp chance of another inside edge.
With the score at 33 for 6 D&C started to give away some cheap runs. Millmore and Sharma were brought into the attack - Millmore almost clean bowled the batsman with his 3rd ball. Then a big hit attempt went straight up in the air - Miller looked to catch but Honeyford Senior called - and he dived over the ball........Poor Pete - a couple of 4s were then whacked off his bowling as the batter took advantage.
Naman bowled well - but no luck - Pete got the wicket he deserved bowling Imran for 13 with a nice inducker.
Waqas who was dropped by Martin...was then becoming dangerous. Martin came on to bowl and started getting hit a little bit - penance for his drop. Although Martin thought on two occassions he had his man - with Taylor dropping two difficult chances on the boundary.
Finally Vasu Reddy made the important catch.
Bruce Callan then came on and claimed a wicket with a fast delivery which caught the edge and ended in Millers gloves to complete the DT innings at 85 all out.
This should have been a lot less had D&C held their chances better - 7 drops in total counted. 50 would have been a more expected score to merit the quality bowling on display on an outfield where it was VERY difficult to score on - partly due to the long grass and the grass cutting - but great credit to some excellent bowling too from all. Vasu and Justin look great additions to the squad from last year.
Batting - Miller and Honeyford started out. Miller looked to take to the attack but his shots on 4 occassions past the bowler - stopped short of the boundary. Martin initially was scraping around. Miller then received a full toss which he lobbed to Mid On for 11. Justin Taylor came in and him and Martin took the score into the 50's batting steadily. Justin was then bowled for 11 or 10.
Vasu was dismissed first ball - bowled. Then there was a little panic as Bruce, Wajahat (1 ball) and Dylan all were bowled for 0.
Naman came in and steadied the ship with Martin as the rain started to bucket down. D&C could have gone off but batted on and saw it through as Naman whacked the winning runs. MArtin ended up on an excellent 30 not out.
Good win - against a team who had walked away with Div 5 last year (The basis of the Edinburgh team that won Div 4 a couple of years ago) - last season they never were bowled out for anything under 120. So for D&C to bowl them out for under 90 on an astro this was an excellent achievement.
Lets hope for more of the same as D&C take on Watsonians at Mckane next Saturday. D&C will be missing skipper Callan however his brother Murray will return to the squad to strenthen the batting which looked a tad weak in the middle order.
