Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI v Edinburgh Uni Staff on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Lost 1 run

Match report D&C going into the last game of the season knew a win could put them in forth spot in the league - countiued to promote the younger element of the club - as they have done since the promotion chances ended way back when we lost to Heriots.

D&C won the toss and elected to bowl.

The opening bowling partnership today was yourngsters Ahmad Anwar and Naman Sharma - both bowled well and tightlty. Ahmad in four overs going for a measly 11 while Naman went for 21 in 5 - however 5 of these runs were as a result of overthrows when attempting a run out.

Top wicket takers Honeyford and Hutton were brought into the attack. Honeyford struck first ball gaining an edge caught by Murray Callan.
Hutton having injured himself in a park run in the morning was struggling to find any of his usual rhythm and was proving expensive which is unlike his normal tight spells.

Cooper came on to try and slow the run rate while Martin picked up Raza lbw for 17.

In the very early stages Rice Whetton who scored 38 before succumbing to Hutton in his second spell was what looked to have been run out by about a yard with a direct hit from Bruce Callan - this wasnt given - and he went on to score considerably more runs.

Then in Bruce Callans spell - EUS skipper Sevak was caught on the foot in from of middle stump and despite appeals this was again turned down to the disbeilief of the bowler the slip cordon the keeper.....
Callan was then hit for 16 of the remaining 4 balls of the over - which was rough justice.

Sevak went on to score 38 more runs before he was given LBW of the bowling of Faisal for 76 - another costly decision not given.

EUS went on to score 220 for 6 in 40 overs - with Cooper picking up a wicket and a run out.

In chase - we set out a target for each 10 overs and youngsters John Hutton and Dylan Wood went out to open. John missed a straight one in the first over - forcing skipper Miller to the crease. Wood then went early next over bringing youngster Faisal to the crease.

Miller and Faisal rebuilt the innings pushing the score to the first target of 40 in 10 overs before Faisal was caught out for 20.

Miller had a couple of lucky escapes once when he was dropped at midwicket.

Martin Honeyford came out and him and Miller batted on. They saw the score up to 140 before Honeyford was bowled for 34.

Murray Callan came to the crease. And played himself in.

Miller escaped a run out appeal that caused a lot of grief. A quick second run Miller looked just home - but the EUS players went crazy. John Hutton umpiring got some verbals but stood strong and was correct in making the right decision. This led to some heated words which Alan Leitch tried to calm down as umpire at the other end.

Murray went about the chase smashing a couple of nice sixes before he was caught out to a blinder of a catch at cover by Rice-Whetton.

Cooper joined Miller and hit two fours before being ran out in the 39th over by Miller looking for a second run.

Into the last over D&C needed 5 to win. Bruce faced the first ball - and Miller attempted a run - but fell a foot short being run out for 82.

Naman Sharma came in and tried to hit the winning runs in one blow but was bowled. Leitch came in and hit 3 of his first ball with the help of an overthrow. Bruce was then unfortunately bowled. With two to win of the last ball Ahmad Anwar with the tough task picked out a fielded with a well hit shot and was unfortunately run out with D&C one run short.

This was a sad way to end the season - but was an exciting game of cricket - where there were some heated exchanges and hot tempers.

D&C should never have been chasing 220 but its hard to justify some of the decisions which cost us over 60 runs. We chased down well a good score - but unfortunately fell just the one run short. Credit to Z Sevak who held his nerve in that final over to win EUS the match.

A good experience for our younger players - and with them getting the chance at this level over the last few games this will hopefully stand them in good stead for next season when they are all that year older and a bit bigger. Hopefully next season we will be able to sustain a promotion bid.
