Edinburgh Uni Staff v Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2018 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report Dunfermline and Carnegie hoped to win their 3rd consecutive game in order to get back into the promotion race - but were unfortunately missing 5 players due to varying circumstances.
Skipper Miller won his 6th toss in 7 games and chose to field first.
With only 4 regular bowlers in the line-up in comparison to 8 normally it was going to be a struggle to find options to bowl.
The two opening bowlers were Hutton and James Honeyford – a combined age of 29 between them.
Both bowled tightly – and Honeyford had a change go a begging as Spreng dropped a dolly in the 2nd over. This wasn’t to cost much as Honeyford clean bowled the batsman for 2 in the 6th over.
Hutton then got in on the act clean bowling Butt for 14.
The Ed Uni staff 3 & 4 then put on a recovery stance from 20 for 2 advancing the score to 41 before Martin Honeyford in his second over got Kiely caught by Jones behind for 15. Rice Williams joined skipper Savak in the middle and they started to build a partnership. Singh bowled his first spell for the club – with accuracy and gyle – while Faisal in his debut also bowled well – but an in form Savak started to punish some of the looser deliveries.
Martin Honeyford finally broke the partnership in the 29th over with keeper Jones again taking another excellent catch behind with the RiceWhetton gone for 23.
Savak was still the danger man – as he went after change bowler Spreng – who was bowling some mixed flight stuff!! (That’s the nicest way to put it). Spreng could have had his man – when Savak melted the ball to the boundary for what looked to be a 6 but Wilson was standing there waiting – and unfortunately put him down.
Hutton then got his finger tips to an acrobatic effort.
Martin Honeyford finally got Savak out – clean bowling him for an excellent 64.
The score had now advanced to 136 for 5 with 10 overs to go. With some excellent bowling however Dunfermline & Carnegie managed to restrict the hosts to 179 for 9 – with Hutton picking up another scalp – James Honeyford another two and a run out from James Honeyford off the last ball.
This was an excellent performance – at one point it looked like we were going to be chasing well over 200 again. There were spells in the game where the Uni skipper Sevak looked to dominate – but this was restricted as D&C started to just spread the field to get him off strike and the run rate slowed to reflect this.
Spreng and Faisal did well to restrict Ed Uni to 62 of 8 overs between them – bowling at possibly the worst time against an in form batsman – while Hutton picked up 2 for 20, James Honeyford 3 for 36, Martin Honeyford 3 for 32, J Singh 0 for 20, Faisal 0 for 31 Spreng 0 for 31. There were some excellent body on the line stops – although there is still room for improvement in the field as there were balls that could have been dived for that were left to run for 4 and again there were a couple of spilled chances. (Especially the Spreng Dolly)
179 looked a large score however considering D&C were missing some of their in form batsmen.
Martin Honeyford and Spreng – opened – and Spreng who has been in excellent form this year fell in the 5th over for just 7 LBW.
Miller came in and went for 0. Score was 23 for 2 off 6.
Wajahat then joined Honeyford and started a recovery taking the score to 50 before being caught LBW to Raza.
Jaggy then joined Martin scored a quick 11 before being caught of the bowling of Sevak. Score now looked ominous at 79 for 4 off 22 overs.

Matt Jones – self-proclaimed “finisher” joined Martin at the crease and the game was back on. At 153 in the 34th over the game looked won. But then disaster as Martin was caught out for 57 then the very next over Jones fell into a trap – being caught for an excellent 40. The score now 159 with 21 needed of 5 overs but new batters Hutton and Wilson at the crease. But both batted well – and although not scoring boundaries – along with some poor bowling giving plenty of extras the scoreboard was in D&C’s favour
Into the last overs 6 balls – 3 to win – Mark Wilson on strike….we couldn’t lose now could we!! Any doubt was quickly wiped off all faces as Wilson smashed the first ball of the over through the covers and turned what should have been 2 into 3 to win the game with 5 balls to spare.
An excellent win – a solid batting performance. Martin and Matt’s partnership got the game into a winning position while Hutton and Wilson saw the game through holding their nerve.
There was one cause of controversy during the innings – when Honeyford strolled a single – only noting that Keily was going to throw to his end at the last minute. A quick dash didn’t look enough – but with a Uni player blocking umpire Spreng’s view – and Miller at the other end not in a position to see the lines – neither umpire could give a decision. It looked out – but without VAR we will never know. There was a similar situation near the end of the Uni Staff innings when the batsman’s bat wasn’t grounded when the bails came off – so although there was some dispute from Uni Staff about their decision – it worked both ways. They were both decisions too close to call.
Again this was an excellent batting and bowling performance given that we were missing a few regulars. With credit due to incomers Wajahat and Jaggy who bowled and batted well – and a massive thanks to Mark Wilson who answered an SOS call on the Friday night – who after years away from cricket came back in and looked confident in smashing the winning runs.
Next up Linlithgow at home – where revenge for the opening day of the season will be seaked.
