Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI v Morton on Sat 23 Apr 2016 at 12 noon
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
Dunfermline and Carnegie got their season of to a winning start - in a comprehensive performance against Morton 2's.
Initially it was thought that the friendly match was against Morton 1's who play in East League 1 - which would have given D&C a much tougher game however the a win is a win no matter that the opposition were from Division 7.
In hindsight this being a friendly it would have been better to bat first and allow more batsmen the chance to perform - however hindsight is a great thing.
As it was D&C were in the field to start with with a strong lineup which was still missing a number of key players.
Missing regulars were new recruit skipper Wayne Sullivan, Sazz Khan, Martin Honeyford, Usman Saleem to name but a few.
Dunfermline and Carnegie opened the bowling with Donald Petrie and Bruce Callan.
From the outset it was clear there werent going to be many runs scored.
Petrie struck first and then second - accounting for both openers for 2 and 8.
Brucie bowled his eight overs straight through for little reward despite bowling well - with figures of 8overs 3maidens NONE for 18.
Young John Hutton replaced Don Petrie and immediately was on target with some fine pace bowling. A few rocky balls saw a couple of boundarys scored but the youngster clean bowled two batsman and finished with figures of 8 overs 2 for 37.
Matt Busby making his debut picked up two wickets - one disposing of the Morton number 3 who top scored with 26 LBW with a peach of a delivery. Then the Morton number 4 who scored 19 with a half tracker which deceived the batsman and clean bowling him.
Matthew Howis and David Miller bowled the balancing overs. Miller clean bowling a batsman who was struggling to face Millers dolly mixtures. One of which flew over the keepers head without bouncing!
Matty picked up a wicket at the other end - then Miller bowled a poor delivery which the batsman missed all ends up - Beg behind the stumps managed to realise batter was out the crease and stumped him gifting Miller an undeserved wicket - but they all count!!
Matt Howis finished off in the final over getting the final batsman caught at deep gully with Muzza Callan snatching the ball eloquently out of the air with his right hand!!
116 ALL OUT and it was clear this wasn't enough - on a reasonable wicket which just kept low on occasions.
The fielding was excellent - with Miller making two unbelievable diving stops with Barclay joining in on the act too. There was one miss run out chance with Spreng not providing enough power on his throw - but all in all a good day fielding. Only two catches - one from the keeper Beg - off Petrie - which actually came of the pad - and that blinder from Muzz. There were no other chances.
Tea was had.
D&C opened with Bruce Callan and James Spreng who put on a reasonable opening partnership of 26. Callan was then caught off the bowling of Ramsay for 10. This brought Murray Callan to the crease - who immediately exerted his authority on this game smashing the ball around.
Spreng then fell playing a wristy hockey shot down leg side - which resulted in the stumps being knocked over for 16.
This was the end of the wickets for the day with Mushy Beg looking in good touch feeding the strike to basher Callan.
Murray quickly brought up his 50. Then with one to win he smashed a 6.
122 for 2 off 18 overs and the game was all over.
An excellent knock from Murray - who was well supported by Beg.
A shame there were so many batsman waiting to come in with Daughtrey, Busby, Barclay and Miller surplus to requirements. And as said before in hindsight batting first would have been the best way to give everyone some pre season practise but it was not to be.
A win is a win though - and we can move onwards on a positive momentum for the league next weekend - where there will be plenty fighting for places with several players back in contention for the game against Tranent.
