Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI v Edinburgh South 2 on Sat 04 Jun 2016 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Fresh from a 10 wicket win against lowly Penicuik last weekend Dunfermline and Carnegie faced up to bottom of the league Edinburgh South hoping to replicate that result.

Dunfermline were minus skipper Wayne Sullivan for this game who had been demoted to the two’s after being too Grumpy too often. Hopefully a game in the twos will see him return the lift and soul…

Vice skipper Matthew Howis took charge.

Howis won the toss stuck the opposition into bat then he rushed off home to pick up the whites he had forgotten.

Busby took the side onto the field and set them up with Davidson and Bruce Callan to open the bowling. Howis arrived back just on time – but delayed the game by dressing himself as he walked onto the pitch.

Jordan from the start was bowling brilliantly with the ball swinging miles – ably assisted by Bruce at the other end who picked up the first wicked with a brotherly partnership – Collard bowled B Callan Caught M Callan (Keeper) for 4.

Score 4 for 1.

Kumar came in to join Welsh at the crease. And quickly edged Bruce to Murray behind the stumps. As the fielders celebrated the wicket Kumar stood firm indicating he didn’t think he had hit it the umpire agreed with him. So the ball that sounded like it had hit something wooden and deviated as it moved past the bat had actually just performed an act of magic and was not a wicket afterall.

Kumar then skied a sliced shot beyong cover with Miller valiantly diving to get his hands on the ball before it dropped – it was in his hands but dropped out as he hit the ground. Was this to be Kumars lucky day?

Davidson was then hit for four by Kumar who should have been out for 0 but then produced a beauty of a ball which left the batsman and flew to Howis at second slip who took a very sharp catch. This time the batsman could not justify not walking so he trundled off for 4.

Brucie was now on fire and Bowled Fitzgerald for 0, then Ross for 1, Bonthrone for 1 and Irving for 1. With the score now 42 for 6 the end was in sight.
Howis had now come on to bowl as had Hutton and Busby from the other end.

During the drinks break Howis had decided he couldn’t bowl from the town end as he was stuglling to get a line and length. So the plan was to have one more over then have a break til later.

Well what a load of rubbish he was talking as next ball he clean bowled Jamal for 1 and the very next ball had Bradford caught behind by Muzz.
44 for 8.

The opener Welsh was still in – the only one who appeared to be able to hold a bat correctly – he was now starting to hit out as he had realised he only had two partners to go.

Unfortunately the spin king Busby had other ideas as he clean bowled him with a delivery which swung, dipped, spun, and whizzed – a fine innings of 26 for Welsh.

The one over wonder kid came on and wrapped up the innings. A couple of mixed deliveries from Gardiner and then he managed to get Mills out playing the ball to Bruce Callan who completed the catch for 6.

Final target was 56.

Dunfermline & Carnegie changed the batting line up with youngster John Hutton and more senior veteran James Spreng opening.

Being the senior batter Spreng forced Hutton to take first ball. With just one run on the board Hutton was bowled for 0 by Kumar.

Edinburgh thought they were onto something here – and their target may be defendable.

Young Dylan Wood joined Spreng at the crease.

James started laying on the wood with some excellent cover drives to get the scoreboard ticking along.

Dylan was looking solid at the other end. And should have got off the mark when he smashed a ball through covers for 2. James having a break at the other end thought nah – maybe next time.

Dylan unfortunately was the bowled by Smith with the score on 20.

Scott Gardiner joined Spreng and the pair added 21 runs to the score before Gardiner went for 7 caught of the bowling of Irving.

James seeing a 40plus Not Out score on the cards decided to start hogging the strike from new partner Murray Callan.

With 8 runs to win James accidently let Murray on strike with 4 balls left in an over. Murray saw off the first ball with a block and showed so much more respect to the next ball as he blocked it. However the next ball almost ended up in the bar as Murray clobbered it over straightish cow for a massive 6. Next ball the game was all over as Murray delicately clobbered it over midoff for a one bounce four.

This was another excellent convincing win. Full marks to Howis and Busby for orchestrating a great attacking field, with Bruce Callan showing that 3 nets a week means he can bowl more than just half trackers as he bowled an exemplary line and length. All other bowlers bowled well too – and fielding was excellent.

Let’s hope this can continue when Dunfermline and Carnegie make the visit next week to Leith to play on the links. Leith were Dunfermline’s bogy team last season beating them twice. If Dunfermline had not had weakened teams out on both occasions and had won they would have ended up in the top half of the table rather than being relegated. So all to play for this weekend with revenge in mind.
