Penicuik 2 v Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 28 May 2016 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won 10 wickets
Match report
Dunfermline and Carnegie visited Penicuik determined to improve upon the mixed performance against Holy x the previous week.
Wayne Sullivan (no longer grumpy) won the toss and elected to field on a wicket that looked as if it was going to offer a lot to the bowlers.
Penicuik had sportingly notified Wayne pre match that they had a first XI player playing today - which was nice of them as they didnt have to do that. This made the game more challenging on paper.
The ill from a night on the town Davidson was given the new ball along with Billy Strange.
Penicuik started steadily but skipper Hilton was the first to fall to the ill Davidson. Playing a lofty shot straight to Wayne Sullivan for 7.
Jordan was on fire and quickly picked up another wicket of Adam for 3 with an easy catch for Bruce Callan.
As we celebrated Jordan vanished from the pitch for some water (which we believe may not have stayed in his sytem for long)
Jordan then bowled to first team player and namesake G Davidson who played a blinding cover drive which was in the air and BRILLIANTLY caught by Bruce "im two inches longer than my brother" Callan.
Jordan disappeared again....and came back to finish a five over spell claiming 3 crucial wickets for only 12 runs.
Mathew Howis joined in on the wicket taking act - when a drive off him was thought to be heading for 4 to the short boundary but SCOTTY GARDINER defied physics and gravity diving to pounce on the ball one handed for an blinding catch dismissing Thomson for 1.
Wickets kept falling - Bruce Callen getting a couple out caught - one by Jordan at the second attempt and the other by Gradiner. Billy Strange feeling left out got in on the act with a clean bowled. Before Bruce claimed a LBW - and Mike "Warney" Busby also claimed an LBW with a ripper.
The Penicuik innings ended on a measly 64 runs for the oppo in 27.4 overs. Wickets Davidson 3 Callan 3 Howis 2 Busby & Strange 1 each.
Tea was not ready so the plan was to go out for ten overs and bat.
Miller and Beg went out to bat with the game plan to still be there come tea with 20/30 runs on the board with no risks. President Rich Barclay was to bat 3 and Scotty "gravity defying" Gardiner was 4.
Penicuiks first team bowler Davidson opened the bowling along with youngster Snodgrass.
Miller got off the mark quickly in the first over.
Beg didnt face a ball until the first ball of the second over where he chased a widish one edged it only for the keeper to drop him - but the ball kept falling towards slip who dropped the ball also - a double dolly drop. Beg was relieved but his luck is so in this season and this showed as his confidence grew.
On the sideline Barclay and Gardiner were practising in the nets. Miller and Beg saw this and said to themselves let not let them bat as we could be here all day.
Miller and Beg started destroying the attack Miller playing some nice pull shots with Beg playing some nice straight drives.
10 overs came and only a few runs were required so no tea was had. Miller cut Davidson for 3 and the game was all over.
Victory by 10 wickets - Miller 33 NO Beg another not out on 27.
Rich Barclay claimed his performance in the nets has now merited him the number 3 slot.
Tea was now had and no negatives from the game with everyone performing well with the ball and bat as required and excellent fielding.
Rich Barclay was the inspiration with the bat and in the field - only having the touch the ball once in the 27th over (Wayne Sullivan knows how to hide the worst fielders).
This game proved how important catches are to matches with none spilled - two great catches by Bruce Callan and an inspirational one by Gardiner.
Next up lowly Edinburgh South at Mckane park.
