Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI v Holy X 2 on Sat 21 May 2016 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 4 runs
Match report
Today emerged Grumpy mark 2.
The day started well with Wayne Sullivan winning the toss (seems to be a lucky tosser)
Wayne the original grumpy elected to bat first.
Pre match there had been a discussion about whether to play on the slightly damp grass pitch or the astroturf. The vote went in favour of the astro - which was probably a blessing given the rain later in the day which may have brought to an end any play on the grass.
Beg and Miller opened. Things started well - but Miller was triggered by skipper Sullivan LBW for 12 with the ball missing leg and off stump. (Perhaps it would have missed middle too)
This brought Busby to the crease. Beg and Busby pushed the score along - both batsmen were struggling to score fluently on the skiddy astro and with good bowling restraining them also. Beg was living a charmed life being dropped on a number of occassions - while Busby was struggling to get the ball off the square. However the pair managed to get the score along to 50 before frustration got to Busby as he was bowled for 15.
Jordan Davidson came to the crease and showed and him and Beg finally started hitting the ball more crisply. The pair got the score ticking along - and put on 106 for the next two wickets. Beg going first for 60 bowled - with Jordan going the next ball in the next over for 47.
This unfortunately left two new batsmen at the crease at the business end of the innings. And so the collapse began.
Ralph Laing on debut and James Spreng were at the crease.
James was first to go - First ball - full bunger on a normal day would have been smashed out the park - however James mishit to midwicket - easy single started running - tripped up on his two left feet and lay facing the ground half way down the track. The mid wicket fielder lit a cigar - had two puffs saw James wasnt getting back so had another couple of puffs - picked the ball up lobbed it to the bowler. James still lying on the ground then watched the bowler take the ball cleanly. The midwicket fielder came over to the bowler gave him a couple of puffs of his cigar before he eventually took the bails off - Spreng sent off with his tail between his legs for 0.
This brought skipper Sullivan to the crease. With his wealth of experience surely he would help add runs to the total. Unfortunately Grumpy hit 3 before skying the ball to mid-off.
Score now 162 for 6.
Ginger president Richie "Plasticine" Barclay came to the crease - with a runner Wayne Sullivan as he injured himself walking over the boundary rope (which wasnt put out this week) to come out to bat. (Rich just needs to think of sport and hes injured)
The runner confused Ralph and before long Ralph had run himself out for 2.
163 for 7.
Stewart Christie didnt last too long before jumping in the duck pond caught behind for 0 then Matthew Howis went the very next ball for 0. Johnny Hutton was last in - but he didnt get a real shot as president Barclay as senior batter decided it was time for tea as he got himself clean bowled.
169 ALL OUT - not good given the fact we were 156 for 3. 13 runs and 7 wickets had fallen.
Skipper Grumpy didn't want to talk about the collapse until after the game - so we focused on tea and going out to try win the game.
Davidson and Howis opened the attack. Both bowled well but the opening batsmen were having no real problems prodding the ball around off the astro.
Finally with the score on 32 the vital breakthrough came with Ralph Laing brilliantly picking up the ball and with an excellent throw to Beg ran out the scampering Warsnop.
The Holy X no 1 and 3 then put on a 60 odd partnership before the next wicket came - with Mike "Warney" Busby getting their no 3 Bates caught of a perfect full toss at square leg by Howis.
Warney should have had a second wicket when the ball was solidly hit to Spreng at cover. Spreng not having his best of days and spilled the catch. Grunts and Groans could be heard from the now Grumpy spin bowler.
The original Grumpy Wayne Sullivan brought himself into the attack and what a great move this was to prove to be.
Not initially - after giving an LBW earlier in the day - the skipper had the Holy X opening batsman absolutely plumb lbw in his first over. So plumb the batsman could have walked......
However Wayne who gave a dubious lbw earlier in the game felt left cheated as his appeal was turned down. And he was now like Busby ranting and moaning (not grunting though)
Wayne did get his man though caught Davidson for 50. Jordan (the opener) had batted well throughout - but finally had come unstuck.
Score was now 123 for 3 and Holy X should still have been in control with wickets in hand.
However with some excellent bowling and fielding the run rate kept rising. And the pressure told as wickets started to fall.
4th wicket fell at 150 with Coaton bowled by Sullivan.
Metha then run out by Davidson as he was dashing for a single - now 155 for 5.
Reiss went caught Hutton bowled Davidson for 5 score 156 for 6 the Welsh bowled by Davidson for 2 165 for 7.
With 4 to win of the last ball - Davidson saw us through bowling a dot ball leaving Holy x 3 runs short on 165 for 7.
The bowling and fielding was excellent with everyone contributing.
Mike "Grumpy2" Busby did have a moan at Miller for misfeilding the ball in the field after his little grump at Spreng for his drop. But all was forgiven post match.
John Hutton bowled the second last over of the game under a heck of a lot of pressure and bowled it brilliantly conceding a few runs - while Davidson held his nerve at the end.
Sullivan and Busby's bowling in the middle of the game slowed the run rate and put the pressure on ably supported by Howis.
At the end of the day a win is a win. This should have been a far more comfortable victory. Batting we were well set and should have added an extra fifty which would have likely resulted in a comfortable win - however the whole team showed character in fighting to the death even when the odds looked against them.
Other points of note James Spreng - we haven't forgotten about your one drop and the one that was misjudged on the boundary - the batter hit a sweet shot high to deep mid off where James on the boundary ran in and looked up in despair as the ball drifted over his head for 4. (One of those days)
Please note this report was written 3 weeks after the game so key facts may be missing. But now there are two Grumpy's in town.
Next match Penicuik away.
