Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club 1st XI v Grange 3 on Sat 14 May 2016 at 13.00
Dunfermline and Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets

Match report Dunfermline and Carnegie after their emphatic win over Freuchie the previous week were back on home soil this week for the visit of Grange’s 3rd XI.

MATCH BALL SPONSORED BY ANDY MILLER

D&C made a couple of enforced changes to their line up – Goody and Bruce dropping out with James Spreng and Jordan Davidson coming in.

Skipper Wayne Sullivan (Hereafter known as Mr Grumpy or Grumpy) won the toss and to some people’s surprise chose to put the opposition in to bat.

The game plan was get the top 5 quickly and skittle the rest as the bottom order hadn’t contributed much this season and if we put the pressure on them they may cave.

We went out to bowl – and the bowlers stuck to the game plan brilliantly – however the same can’t be said for the fielding.

Second over of the game a beautiful away swinging delivery caught the edge of Bray’s bat and went straight to first slip. Safe hands Miller got two hands safely to the ball and pushed the ball down his thighs and just when it looked like it had settled their the ball fell to the ground. DOH!

Oh well we all thought one catch doesn’t mean much – as long as we don’t drop any more.

Next over Donald Petrie bowled a beauty to Metcalffe – caught the edge – with the ball going to keeper/first slip – Mushy at keeper left it (Late) allowing Jordan to drop the catch at first slip.

Two down – three overs in. Surely that was it for the day.

Well over number 4 – Jordan bowled Bray hit back at him – Jordan put it down – another drop. Well that surely must be it.

No next up Scott Gardner dropped one – can’t remember the specifics but it was a dolly.

Skipper Mr Grumpy (can you figure out why) had steam coming out his head.

The two openers after 5 overs had been dropped 5 times between them. (Possibly one more I can’t remember)

With the score on 34 and in the 13th over something very strange happened. Metcallfe was getting over confident and thought he could hit the ball in the air all day – but finally of the bowling of Don Petrie he hit one to one handed Howis who safely pouched the ball.

Hallelujah was the word spouted by Gav Ross as he watched on as a spectator.

The team huddle was where no one wanted to be – but Mr Grumpy vented his anger and focused on the game and said the first 5 overs were only going to be mentioned after the game.

Worrall came out at 3 for Grange – and straight away played a corker of a back foot drive for 4 through the covers.
He then of the bowling of Hutton played an exquisite cut shot for 4 of Howis.

He looked a different class – but class doesn’t build an innings – one shot too many off Petrie and a flying Grumpy at Mid-on took a brilliant catch to dispose of the no 3 for only 8 runs. 44 for 2.

Matthew Howis then picked up the opener Bray for 13 caught Busby.

Grange then ticked along to 70 runs before wicket number 4 which was a Strange wicket. A CATCH (at the second attempt) from Mike Busby off the bowling of William Strange took care of the Grange No 4 for 14 runs.

The Grange top 5 were then a thing of the past when Deboulay was clean bowled by an excellent Davidson delivery for 14. 82 for 5.

Grumpy gathered the troops and stated getting Grange all out for 120 at most was now the game plan. Even less if possible.

This rallied the troops – and shortly after Jordan Davidson dropped his third catch of the day at slip diving brilliantly over the ball.

Then Scotty Gardner was brought into the attack. After his excellent spell last week – it was hoped Scott would mop up the tail which was starting to wag a bit.

Scott’s first ball was a bit of a loosener – extremely WIDE!

Then we had a straightish ball then a double bouncing wide and then another double bouncer then another wide then out the blue a Peach of a full bunger the batsman said to himself “finally a ball I can hit” Poor Docherty – Grange’s no 7 picked out safe hands Grumpy at Mid on who took another splendid catch. Docherty gone without threatening to trouble the scorers.

For some reason the skipper decided Scott’s spell for this week was only one over – the scorebook doesn’t lie though – excellent figures for the year end averages when no one remembers what actually happened – 1 over 1 for 4 will help in the averages battle – next match I’m sure Scott will be back on track.

Score now 92 for 6.

Little John then got in on the act – youngster Hutton who was bowling well managed to grasp an inside edge from Allan – Mushy Beg behind the stumps took a brilliant catch diving to his left to complete the wicket – nice work by both.
Next up to report on was the “Non Drop” catch by Miller – Matt Howis who had bowled splendidly all day – got the batsman to play a false shot – the ball delightfully looped up in the air to cover where Miller stood. Unfortunately in Scotland it’s not often the sun comes out – so when the ball goes right across the sun no one really knows what to do. Miller ran forward stopped as he lost the ball then finally saw the ball again when it bounced off the ground and hit him on the head. Mathew Howis was not amused – now there were probably two Grumpys. The skipper from Australia and used to playing in the sun gave some handy advice at tea time – as in hold your hand up and block the sun until the ball is visible again and catch the flaming thing – some coach saying this after the event!!
Strange came on and took wicket number 8 clean bowling no 9 Seabright for 7 then next ball clean bowling Waymark for 0. 120 for 9.

Wicket for 0 runs and we had kept Grange to the skippers target unfortunately we gifted another 13 runs before Hutton got Tomar caught behind by Beg for 4 in the very last over.

Grange 3’s 133 All out. Grange despite having a lot of luck early on managed to pull together what was a reasonable score on a bowler friendly wicket. If this was a batting track the score would likely be a lot bigger as it was obvious from the strokes being played the batsman weren’t used to playing on a track where the ball had two paces of the pitch.

A Tea was had – was great at Tea to see that the C box was full of spectators – supporting the side – and eating up any leftover teas!!

Grumpy had calmed down a bit by now so we will call him Wayne again.

Dunfermline and Carnegie went out to bat Miller and Beg the opening pair this week. The game plan was set by Sully – win the game losing as few wickets as possible. And the plan was basically see off the opening bowlers and take it from there.

Tomer and Allan opened from Grange and kept runs to a minimum. After 8 over’s the openers were taken off with 20 for 0 on the board.

Collister and Seabritght into the attack – Miller and Beg played some nice shots – Mushy hit a big 6 – Miller dealing in a few 4’s.

16 over’s came and finally a wicket for Grange a half track delivery from Seabright rolled along the ground and left Miller red faced as he tried to pull a bouncing ball – the stumps were hit – 48 for 1 Miller gone for 28 with Beg still on 17.

Mike Busby came in to bat in no mood to hang around – he started with a couple of singles but then started hitting the boundary with regular aplomb.

Beg started taking advantage of some loose bowling too smacking the ball around.

Grange never stood a chance with this pair in no mood to give any chances away and the target was wrapped up with the loss of no more wickets in the 32nd over.

Mushy Beg again not out (2 weeks running) for 51 and Mike another solid display almost catching Mushy up closing on 45 not out.

An excellent win – by 9 wickets – but again this could have been more convincing had early catches been taken in the field.

My Grumpy Sullivan pointed this out post match – and dished out some very heavy fines post match – however the skipper was correct in his grumpiness – the fielding was a poor and needs drastic improvement.

There were some excellent bowling performances - Jordan despite his three drop catches bowled brilliantly – Don Petrie tightly – Matthew Howis frustrated by drops off his bowling could have had more than 1 wicket – Billy Strange was on a hattrick took 3 – John Hutton some excellent pace bowling took 2. And last but not least – if we can call it bowling Scott Gardner 1 over 1 wicket for 4.

Post match John Hutton was awarded his hat by Ginger President Rich Barclay. The first of many colts hopefully to break into the first team.

Next up for Dunfermline and Carnegie another home match against Holy Cross.

POST MATCH REPORT EDIT - MIKE BUSBY DROPPED ANOTHER CATCH!! No surprise their according to Scott Gardner.
